Sony’s presence at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) 2023 in Amsterdam was marked by the unveiling of an array of innovative products, headlined by the new Burano camera. This new addition to the CineAlta range boasts a full-frame recording capability of up to 8.6k resolution.
Anthony Kable, Group Manager of the Professional Solutions Division at Sony Australia, enthusiastically detailed the features of the new Burano during an interview with Asia-Pacific Broadcasting+. “Burano is a new model in our CineAlta range of cameras,” Kable began. He noted its compatibility with both P-Mount Sony lenses and third-party offerings, alongside its internal variable ND for exposure control in a full cinema system. “The camera itself also has an autofocus system, similar to what is found in other Sony cinema line cameras, such as face detect and eye tracking, especially when working with the E-mount lenses,” he added.
Elaborating on the design and target audience for the Burano, Kable explained, “While the Venice systems are intended for a crew setup, the Burano is designed more for a single operator.” This adaptability reflects in its features catering to an individual’s ease of operation. Kable envisions its use in diverse settings: “Perfect for documentaries, nature shots, corporate videos, or when you need a compact body for gimbals, drones, or similar setups.”
Additionally, Sony introduced the FZ90 system camera, sporting a 4K 2/3 inch sensor apt for studio environments. “The camera will do native 12 G SDI directly out of the camera head. But it can also connect via a SMPTE cable or a nitric hybrid cable back to a CCU for remote control,” said Kable. The versatility of the FZ90 is further highlighted by its capacity for a 10-kilometer range via single-mode fiber, allowing for extended remote operations.
Sony’s range didn’t stop there. Kable touched on their new audio system cameras, including the new V series in the HDC. “The HDC-3500V and 5500V, they have variable ND filters. Unlike the Burano’s Electronic Variable ND, these have a physical glass filter, ideal for low temperatures, say, during outdoor winter sports,” he highlighted.
The broadcasting titan also showcased a new network adapter, various IP configuration tools, and 2110 network configuration options. Kable’s enthusiasm was palpable as he shared, “We’ve got a whole range of products across different areas.”
Summing up Sony’s experience at IBC 2023, Kable commented, “It’s been fantastically successful. We’re especially pleased with the response to the new monitors and the wide range of our product offerings.”
IBC 2023 has once again proven to be the global hub for broadcasting innovations, with industry leaders like Sony introducing groundbreaking technologies that promise to shape the future of media and entertainment.
