Reuters expands global newsgathering capabilities with Sony cameras

In a move to enhance its global newsgathering capabilities, Reuters has partnered with Sony to equip its video journalists worldwide with the latter’s Alpha and XDCAM camera systems, coupled with advanced audio equipment.
Under this collaboration, Reuters has opted for Sony’s Alpha 7S III and PXW-Z280 cameras as the cornerstone of its newsgathering toolkit. These cameras are complemented by Sony’s G Master lenses and UWP-D wireless audio systems, designed to meet the rigorous demands of professional journalism in diverse environments.
Anthony Kable, Group Manager of Sony Australia’s CCS Division, said, “Sony has designed its cameras to operate to the best of their abilities in high-pressure environments such as newsgathering.
“We do this so we can provide the world’s leading media organisations with cameras that are ultimately reliable whilst producing the very best picture quality so they can capture news whenever required. Reuters’ decision to choose Sony cameras for its worldwide video group is a great example of that philosophy in action.”
The PXW-Z280 camcorder offers ease of use, an electronic variable neutral density (ND) filter, and Sony’s Instant high dynamic range (HDR) workflow, eliminating the need for colour grading. Its integration into cloud-based workflows ensures secure and efficient newsgathering operations globally.
Meanwhile, the Alpha 7S III has been employed by content creators for its compact design, picture quality, and advanced autofocus capabilities, pivotal for Reuters’ journalistic needs. The flexibility of Sony’s E-Mount system, paired with a wide array of compatible lenses such as the SEL2470GM2, provides Reuters journalists with versatility in capturing the essence of events as they unfold.
The deployment of Sony equipment has already commenced across 23 Reuters offices globally, marking a substantial investment aimed at fortifying Reuters’ commitment to delivering timely and high-quality news content. This new development builds upon Sony’s Media Backbone Hive, already integral to Reuters’ multi-platform news production system, further solidifying the enduring partnership between the two organisations.
