Astro selects Broadpeak for video delivery infrastructure upgrade

Broadpeak has been chosen by Astro to enhance its sooka streaming platform with hybrid origin packaging for streamlined video delivery and a content delivery network (CDN) solution with high-performance local caching for Astro Fibre customers. These deployments are helping Astro to cut infrastructure costs while delivering premium live and on-demand content to millions of Malaysians.
Euan Smith, Group CEO, Astro, said, “At Astro, we are focused on continuously enhancing the quality and reliability of our streaming services to meet the evolving needs of our customers. As part of our broader innovation initiatives, we are investing in scalable and flexible infrastructure that supports the delivery of high-quality content across platforms like sooka and our Astro Fibre broadband services.
“Our collaboration with Broadpeak is one element of this journey, enabling us to adopt a modern architecture that supports efficient content delivery and positions us well for future growth.”
Astro has deployed Broadpeak’s high performance Origin Packager as part of a cloud-hybrid architecture for sooka, its popular standalone over-the-top (OTT) service offering premium live sports, local content, originals and on-demand entertainment to mobile-first and big screen audiences.
In collaboration with Irdeto and other ecosystem partners, the new solution replaces sooka’s previous Origin system and introduces enhanced flexibility and performance, combining on-premises servers with AWS instances to optimise scale, resilience and cost.
Broadpeak’s Origin Packager enables just-in-time packaging and encryption for both live events, linear channels and video-on-demand (VoD) content in multiple adaptive bitrate (ABR) formats, providing streamlined content workflows and reducing storage requirements.
In parallel, Astro has deployed Broadpeak’s EdgePeak solution to optimise content delivery to Astro Fibre customers as part of its enhanced hybrid CDN approach. The new deployment introduces local caching capacity at the edge of the ISP network, improving streaming performance and quality of experience (QoE) for Astro Fibre subscribers, while reducing energy requirements and saving costs.
EdgePeak delivers powerful caching and edge computing capabilities, unlocking enhanced security, energy efficiency and resource utilisation for operators looking to build their own high performance CDN.
Jacques Le Mancq, CEO, Broadpeak, said, “Astro is a leading example of how Tier 1 operators in APAC are taking greater control over video delivery and adopting powerful and trusted streaming solutions.
“This partnership underscores our growing presence in the region and the strong demand for scalable, premium performance streaming solutions that enable operators to optimise costs, elevate quality of experience, and win the future of video.”
