Canon unveils EOS C700 FF at 2018 NAB Show

As the newest member of Canon’s Cinema EOS family, the EOS C700 FF full-frame camera is packed with a newly designed CMOS image sensor, as well as HDR capabilities

Making its debut for Canon USA at 2018 NAB Show is the EOS C700 FF, the company’s first full-frame cinema camera.

Available in both PL and EF mount, the EOS C700 FF is equipped with a CMOS image sensor that features a total of 5952×3140 photosites with a digital cinema 17:9 aspect ratio.

The newly developed sensor has an active image area of 38.1×20.1mm, and supports readout at full size, as well as Super 35mm, Super 16mm and anamorphic modes. In addition to full-frame lenses, the sensor can be used with conventional Super 35mm lenses to originate 4K/Ultra HD (UHD) production formats, and Super 16mm lenses to originate 2K/HD production formats in crop modes.

Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO of Canon USA, commented: “After listening to our customers and closely monitoring market trends, Canon set forth a new goal: to launch a full-frame cinema camera. With this introduction, we are excited to see the C700 FF in the hands of industry professionals as they shoot their latest projects.”

Like other cameras in the 4K/UHD Cinema EOS family, the EOS C700 FF utilises CFast cards to capture 4K/UHD or 2K/HD images. The camera also allows high frame rate (HFR) recording of up to 168fps in 2K crop, and relay or simultaneous recording onto both CFast cards.

In the creation of high dynamic range (HDR) imagery, the EOS C700 FF provides 15 stops of latitude, along with Canon’s log gammas — such as Canon Log3, Canon Log2 and Canon Log — and colour science. According to Canon, Canon Log2 is ideal when originating HDR imagery containing both highlight details and deep shadowed details, whereas Canon Log3 offers a wider dynamic range while retaining performance in darker regions.

The EOS C700 FF will be on display at booth C4325 during 2018 NAB Show, which will take place from April 7-12 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Nevada, USA.
