LiveU joins trial to optimise 5G technology for primary contribution

LiveU has won a FIDAL Open Call to participate in the ‘Large Scale Field Trials Beyond 5G’ research project, which seeks to test innovative solutions with partners in the fields of media and Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR).

The FIDAL project is co-funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme and Smart Networks & Services.

As part of the FIDAL/B5VideoNet (B5GVN) project, LiveU will test use cases spanning on- and off-site remote production, cloud-based production, mobile production, and edge-cloud production. It will also test Beyond 5G (B5G) technologies, such as network slicing, edge computing, standalone (SA) private network/SNPN, and network exposure.

The tests include selected elements of the LiveU EcoSystem including the LU800 multi-cam portable encoder, LiveU Mobile Receiver, LiveU Xtend bonding device, LU-Link cloud service, and LiveU Ingest automatic recording solution with cloud-based remote production.

To test for reduced latency, LiveU will also use edge computing services in the operator’s internal edge cloud instead of the public cloud. B5GVN will test this concept and its potential benefit for the media production industry, including reduced costs by localising video transfers.

Alongside the above, LiveU remote production use cases will also utilise the 5G-SA private network and network exposure components. The 5G-SA Private Network can be used in LiveU’s On-site Production solution where both the uplink and the downlink can remain on the same network in the same location, or in different locations and networks.

This on-site remote production workflow supports cost-effective multi-cam production. For this, LiveU will be using its LU800 PROs as well as its Mobile Receiver, Xtend and LU-Link solutions.

Baruch Artman, LiveU’s AVP, Head of 5G Projects and ESG, said, “This is an important trial that enables LiveU to gain further experience using the most advanced Beyond-5G and towards 6G technologies.

“LiveU project’s goal is to leverage its core bonding technology for reliable live quality video production on the one hand, and the advanced ‘Beyond 5G‘ services and technologies on the other, for the benefit of innovative and cost-effective use cases.”
