At IBC 2023, business and product experts from Rohde & Schwarz will be on hand to discuss how 5G broadcast and the company’s latest transmitter generation can redefine the possibilities of content delivery and distribution.
Cheong Yew-jin, Director, Broadcast & Media, Asia Pacific, told APB+, “5G, as part of 3GPP, offers new models of content delivery and distribution, allowing users to receive content without the need of a SIM card, independent of their mobile network operator subscription plan.
“In addition, it builds a bridge between the previously-separate over-the-top (OTT) ‘streaming’ world and linear broadcast television.”
For 5G broadcast to take off however, there are challenges to be overcome. Chief among them, according to Cheong, is the availability of mobile devices, as well as smart TVs, that are capable of receiving a 5G broadcast signal.
He added, “Other challenges include the restrictions of use and availability of 5G broadcast-relevant spectrum, as well as the establishment of suitable business models for the variety of different operators.”
To help support the transition to 5G broadcast, Rohde & Schwarz offers a wide range of high-, medium-, and low-power transmitters. “At the very core of our 5G broadcast offering is the Broadcast Service & Control Centre BSCC 2.0, which functions as a gateway between content playout and the transmission network.”To find out more about how the Broadcast Service & Control Centre BSCC 2.0 can support new business models from venue casting to multimedia streaming on demand, live casting, and live commerce, make a beeline to booth 7.B21 at IBC 2023, which is taking place from 15 to 18 September at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre.
