Taiwanese telco partners Tata Communications to drive global IoT connectivity

Chunghwa Telecom joins Tata Communications MOVE – IoT Connect ecosystem with an aim to generate subscriptions from IoT devices from both consumer and industrial sectors

Chunghwa Telecom, a Taiwanese mobile network operator, and Tata Communications have entered a partnership to bring global connectivity to consumer electronics and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Under this partnership, Chunghwa Telecom will join the Tata Communications MOVE – IoT Connect ecosystem, which allows IoT devices to be deployed quickly both locally and internationally by leveraging Tata Communications’ community of mobile network operators worldwide.

Chen Ming-Shih, president of mobile business group, Chunghwa Telecom, said: “Our aim is to generate millions of subscriptions from IoT devices in the next three years, and our work with Tata Communications will help us fulfil this ambition.

“Tata Communications MOVE will give our customers’ IoT services borderless network coverage across 200 countries, ensuring a consistently high-quality and reliable user experience. At the same time, we’re able to make extra returns by being part of the Tata Communications MOVE ecosystem of mobile network operators.”

Designed as an API-enabled, software-defined and fully automated platform, Tata Communications MOVE – IoT Connect is able to accelerate the time to market for new IoT services, providing businesses “complete visibility and control” over their IoT devices and associated data usage patterns on a global scale, said Tata Communications.

One of Chunghwa Telecom’s first Tata Communications MOVE -IoT Connect customers is TaiDoc, a manufacturer of medical devices. Using Tata Communications MOVE -IoT Connect, TaiDoc will be able to extend the reach of its devices to countries such as China, Thailand and the US.

Anthony Bartolo, CPO of Tata Communications, added: “Cellular connectivity is an effective foundation for IoT services, but the problem is that today’s mobile networks are inherently local — there is no such concept as global mobile network. We want to change that. We’re excited to work with Chunghwa Telecom and other mobile network operators around the world to build a truly global ecosystem of connectivity, and spur IoT adoption by business worldwide.”
