As the Internet continues to evolve at an ever-increasing rate, consumers are provided with numerous new opportunities to acquire and consume media content. More crucially, the media and entertainment industry is continually exploring new ways to compete and adapt in this evolving landscape.
For the Society of Motion Pictures and Television Engineers (SMPTE), its main highlight at 2018 NAB Show was the SMPTE ST 2110 Professional Media Over Managed IP Networks suite of standards.
The SMPTE ST 2110 standards suite specifics the carriage, synchronisation and description of separate elementary essence streams over IP for real-time production, playout and other professional media applications.
To date, the standards that have been published under the SMPTE ST 2110 specification are: SMPTE ST 2110-10/-20/-30, which address system concern and uncompressed video and audio streams; and SMPTE ST 2110-21, which specifics traffic shaping and delivery timing of uncompressed video.
Aimée Ricca, marketing and communication, SMPTE, told APB: “Professional media over IP is one thing that SMPTE has been working with through SMPTE ST 2110, which will eventually be all IP. That said, it will be for a period of time mostly IP, because there is still a need for SDI.”
SMPTE ST 2110 standards enable operators to separately route and break away ancillary data, as well as the audio and video. This change promises to simplify the process of adding metadata such as captions, subtitles, teletext and time codes, as well as tasks such as the processing of multiple audio languages and types, said SMPTE.
Although all elements can be routed separately, they can be brought together again at the endpoint.
