ARRI has released the ALEXA 35 Live Xtreme, a new camera that delivers high-frame-rate (HFR) output of up to 8x to live productions via traditional SDI workflows — removing the need for a separate high-speed camera in multi-camera broadcast environments.
The camera expands the ARRI Multicam System and comes permanently pre-installed with the existing High Speed License for ALEXA 35 and a new HFR SDI License. Combined with ARRI’s LPS-1 Fibre Camera Adapter and Fibre Base Station, and a standard slow-motion playout server such as SimplyLive or EVS, the camera outputs HFR at up to 8x in HD or 2x in 4K/Ultra HD (UHD).
Up to 4x HFR can be carried on a single SDI connector, with higher speeds split across both SDI outputs.
Frame rates up to 330fps use the camera’s full dynamic range of 17 stops, while a Sensor Overdrive mode enables frame rates up to 480fps at a dynamic range of 11 stops. Whatever frame rate is chosen for the slow-motion feed, the system simultaneously outputs a live feed for broadcast, allowing operators to switch between the programme frame rate and HFR in real time. A phase-blending feature provides control over motion blur and shutter effects in the live feed.
Sports broadcasting is a key application area, with ARRI pointing to the camera’s wide dynamic range for high-contrast environments such as winter sports. Because a separate high-speed camera is no longer required, HFR content carries the same ARRI look as the regular feed, keeping a consistent visual style across live coverage and highlight reels. Other applications include live concerts and fashion events, where the 2x 4K/UHD output allows slow motion at maximum resolution.
The company said the ARRI Multicam System has been adopted by broadcasters to lift the visual impact of live coverage, citing the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest, which used ARRI cameras for its image quality and creative colour control. Users can select looks from the ARRI Look Library or build their own LUTs, with traditional live painting still possible.
