ITV has widened the digital footprint of its flagship reality series Love Island by introducing a live-streamed companion podcast workflow powered by LiveU’s cloud production technology.

To coincide with the launch of Series 12 last June, the UK broadcaster live streamed the official podcast Love Island: The Morning After for the first time on ITVX and YouTube, offering viewers a simultaneous “watch-along” experience alongside the main programme on ITV2.

The move marked a new phase in ITV’s digital-first strategy, blending linear TV with live social and streaming formats.

This initiative required a flexible cloud workflow capable of synchronising live feeds between Majorca, where the main show is filmed, and London, where the podcast is produced.

ITV turned to the LiveU Studio cloud video platform to orchestrate the production. A LiveU Video Return server in Majorca delivered a low-latency feed of the main programme to a LiveU LU800 unit in London, allowing presenters to follow the show in real time. The podcast feed and the main programme feed were then sent into LiveU Studio, where a picture-in-picture output was created so viewers could watch the live podcast alongside the broadcast.

Leon Langdale, Technical Producer, ITV Studios, explained, "Reaching younger audiences means meeting them where they are, and that increasingly means digital and social platforms.

“Since the show’s relaunch in 2015, viewing habits have undergone a dramatic shift. LiveU enables us to respond quickly and cost-effectively, supporting new formats that engage viewers on their terms."

The live format represented a departure from the show’s traditional post-production podcast workflow, which typically records after transmission and is edited overnight. Going live required additional resilience and orchestration, with LiveU Studio playing a central role in managing timing, coordination and delivery.

The approach was extended for the season finale on August 4, when a 30-minute live teaser programme was streamed immediately before the final episode across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. The pre-final show, produced by ITV’s Lifted Digital team, used LiveU Studio to manage multiple concurrent live streams and deliver last-minute interviews and behind-the-scenes content from the villa.

Langdale continued, “LiveU Studio has given us a flexible entry point into cloud-based production, and we’re keen to expand its use.

“While we still rely on traditional kit for much of the workflow, there’s no reason we can’t evolve into cutting cameras, handling LRT feeds, and adding live graphics directly in the cloud. It’s an exciting direction of travel.”

For LiveU, the project highlights how broadcasters are blending traditional broadcast with digital-first workflows.

“Digital-first is no longer just a viewer trend, it’s an expectation,” said Matthew Stringer, UK Sales Director, LiveU. “As networks face increased pressure to produce more content with tighter budgets, the LiveU EcoSystem enables broadcasters like ITV to leverage our agile and cost-effective cloud-based production workflows, keeping pace with the industry’s rapidly evolving demands without sacrificing quality.”
