Facing strong competition from Comcast, Warner Bros and Disney streaming services, Netflix has spent more than US$13 billion to finance the production of original and licensed content in 2018. And with the price hike in April, the industry is anticipating that Netflix will start ad-supported VoD model.
Strategic move by Mediacorp
Mediacorp, Singapore’s leading transmedia platform, has formed a strategic partnership with iflix, an OTT platform for emerging markets, to pave the way for regional streaming of locally produced content. This is in line with the shift from star-studded contents to hyper-local originals.
AVoD is the new black
OTT continues to gain importance in the broadcast industry in Asia Pacific, as it is poised to increase its advertising revenue by US$5 billion in 2019, according to Digital TV Research; it also estimated the revenue from OTT TV and movie would garner $48 billion by 2024.
